Review of Tag (2018) by Kurt M — 14 Dec 2018
What could have easily been a passable, run of the mill summer comedy is actually a stand out this year, and another for Warnet Bros', after the surprise that was Game Night.
With a simple premise, WHICH happens to be based on a real group of childhood friends, TAG gives us a Hard R-Rated comedy. The jokes mostly hit, as Helms, Johnson and Burress are pretty damn funny which can be expected. But the real stand outs are Jeremy Renner and Jon Hamm. I honestly don't know why Jon Hamm is not one of the biggest movie stars in the world, because he's got it all - looks, charisma and here - the one two comedy punch of being suave but being a total smart ass. It lands.
Renner, taking a break from the Marvel Cinematic universe, plays the borderline genius BUT methodical and psychotic tag player they've been chasing for 35 years now. Calculated and mental, there are a few scenes with him that'll have you laughing hysterically.
Think of Hawkeye..... with donuts ð~,. You'll understand later.
TAG comes down to the basic theme of lifelong friendships and remembering that we are all kids at heart, and its because of these.
Reminders that the movie packs an emotional punch along with a comedic one. There were very few dry eyes in the theatre as the credits rolled, making for a great comedy with a lot of heart right at the finale.
TAG might rub some the wrong way but it damn sure has rewatchability, heart and laughs.
Grade : B.
