Review of T2 Trainspotting (2017) by Eric F — 03 Apr 2017
It's not the same movie.
I think if T2 had been the same movie I would have been really disappointed. The question begged to be answered, how do junkies/flunkies handle growing old? They're not the same kids they were and the film represents that fairly honestly. Each is still haunted by the choices they've made. Each is still trying to recapture what was most important to them. Renton may have seemingly escaped but it's finally sinking in that what he wanted to escape wasn't geography. If that's all this movie said in 'Point A to Point B linear narrative' then that could have been a very dull movie. Instead they show they're still struggling with their own bad wiring and the only things that make them sane is who they are with while being crazy. If you find a way to avoid destroying yourself you can 'go home.' You 'choose life' on your own terms, but you have to find the right 'drug'.
I enjoyed it and I can't wait to see it again.
Let me just add, as a huge fan of the first film, when it came out, I laughed a lot in this film but I don't know if this film will transcend it's target Trainspotted demographic. Because this is a film about aging and looking back, to really enjoy this film, you need to have taken the required nostalgia inducing 'hit' the first time around. But maybe I'm wrong.
