Review of T2 Trainspotting (2017) by Harsh C — 11 Dec 2017
For fans of both the original trilogy of books by Irvine Welsh and the original masterwork of a film, a lot of suspense was in the air about T2 from the moment rumours began circulating. Twenty years have transpired both in reality and in the story arc. Would Renton retain his classic sensibilities and -- somewhat -- moral hangups? Would Begbie and Sick Boy have matured in ways they did not in Welsh's sequel?
From the moment the film starts, all expectations and fears vanish. Here we have a sequel which builds off the legacy of the original work just enough to faithfully create it's own storyline without looking like a piece of shameless hackwork or a third-rate homage cash grab. The plot is even more delightfully unbelievable and ridiculous than the original, and the limitations of several characters have dramatically been altered (or vanished entirely) in the intervening two decades. As a super-fan of the original who can recite every line, I thoroughly enjoyed the new sequel. Sick Boy is even more bombastic and elitist than before, and the song sequence was one of the funniest scenes I've seen in a film this year. Choose this sequel. Choose life.
