Review of T2 Trainspotting (2017) by Owen B — 27 Jul 2017
After 20 years of waiting, Danny Boyle returns to the cult classic which shaped British culture in the 90's leaving many of us worried. Previously, most returns to the silver screen haven't been exactly masterpieces, the most recent being 'Dumb and Dumber' which also was an undeniable 90's classic, however it's 2014 sequel was quite the opposite receiving a rotten rating of 29%.
Does T2 suffer from the same nostalgia driven money grab? Far from. Danny Boyle adds to his ever-growing list of films that don't fail to have the audience leaving with either a feeling of seeing something special or a slight giggle, in T2's case both, with a finale which one minute has you gripped to your seat and the next giggling to yourself with what only can described as a gift to the fans.
T2 succeeds in reviving the dream like editing seen in the original, from Sick Boy and Renton explaining the career of a footballer, to a failed suicide attempt which adds an aspect of seriousness to the otherwise quite event less opening few scenes.
To fans expecting an experience as relatable as the original however, you may be disappointed, the plot mostly follows the impact Renton has had on his close friends after the events of the original, unless fans grew up to either being locked up in prison or suffocating themselves I would say this sequel is far from as relatable as its predecessor, however a modern update of an iconic monologue leaves us questioning the world we live in with a perfectly timed pause afterwards to let the audience take in what they had just experienced.
Overall, T2 Trainspotting is a superb Crime Drama but if you go into the film expecting to be chuckling to yourself at things you imagine yourself doing then you maybe severely disappointed.
