Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Andrew B — 01 Jul 2010
This may be the most epic meditation on humanity and art to ever hit celluloid. Can you even call it a film? This perplexing opus continually beseeches itself to be something greater: after a second viewing I can officially say it succeeds, and upon a third viewing, there's no other word to more effectively describe this film than brilliant.
"Ambitious" is a modest description; never before have I witnessed anything achieve such broadness yet such density. This is the life of the thinking human being in all of it's confusing, misunderstood glory (albeit self-indulgent, scatter-brained, funny, fearful and utterly depressing).
Kaufman's directorial debut may forever be his masterpiece.
