Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Brett C — 04 Jan 2018
I loved this. Your mileage may vary. This is by no means an "easy" movie. It meanders, it takes odd turns with no explanation. Many will find it infuriating and I completely understand that. This is Art with a capital "A" and it might hit you many different ways depending on your mood.
Why it might have "hit" me the right way: I turn 50 in a week. Synecdoche, New York's themes of love, loss, and impermanence are all things that are front of mind for me right now.
As sprawling, surreal, and absurd as the story becomes, it's never anything less than very personal and emotional.
This might be Phillip Seymour Hoffman's masterpiece; certainly it's up there with Capote. The performances are all-around brilliant. Add to that the confident nature of the script (Kaufman sees little need to explain ANYTHING), and I found this a very rewarding experience. I look forward to watching it again.
