Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Patrick O — 03 Aug 2010
Why do I hear this movie called "pretentious" so much and not like "Crash" or "Beautiful Mind" or "Iron Man 2" or something? Not saying those movies are, but.... I think that word is so misused.
I'm not saying that this is a good analogy for the film, but was, say, Jaques Derrida (or somebody like that) pretentious in interviews and therefore not worth listening to? Is Kafka pretentious? I'm not saying this is objectively a great movie, I'm definitely not saying it's kafka ... I myself love it, think it's one of the funniest things i've seen ever m, and if Kaufman really was trying to make a "horror film" like he says, he spooked me ...
You don't have to like the movie, but what's up with all the people saying "This is pretentious trash, etc...hotpiping horseshit, etc..."?
Don't see why "pretentious" has to be one of the first things we search for when watching a movie or reading a book.
