The fact that more effort has gone into the first 10 minutes of this little slice of Kaufman's brain than most directors manage in their entire lifetime makes this all the more disappointing.

Amongst all the painfully obvious and contrived allegory's for old age, creativity, genius, jealousy, parentage and relationships, the time skipping memories of it's wonderfully portrayed protagonist, the superb and royally underused Emily Watson and the twisting and turning and completely hilarious nature of the final third - is a superb, coherent, surreal masterpiece. Sadly, Synecdoche New York is not it.
