Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Mark C — 21 Mar 2012
This movie reminded me quite a lot of Magnolia, but I enjoyed this and hated Magnolia. I've been trying to figure out why I reacted so differently. I think there's something just much more honest about Synecdoche, New York.
It's brutal, but it's honest. You know pretty much exactly what you're getting, and the ride there still manages to surprise and occasionally delight. There isn't really a plot, the subject matter is dark and depressing, there are characters on top of characters to the point that nothing really makes any sense.
.. and yet, I enjoyed myself.
