Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Sean C — 30 Apr 2012
Often confusing, but that's the norm of Charlie Kaufman's genius mind as a screenwriter. I think this film proves that he should just stick to screenwriting rather than director. It wasn't terrible direction, but I really think this would have been a movie that Spike Jonze could have done quite better (as he's shown through past works w/ Charlie).
All in all, the whole mess comes together at the end to give you a fairly satisfying creative outcome. The ensemble was decent but was lead by a typical Seymour Hoffman job (Not quite as good as any of his Oscar nominations but possibly good enough for Best Actor in a Golden Globe).
One aspect that has been over looked, is the great makeup job. Tastefully done. The setup was also very good. Overall, a good effort from Kaufman in his directorial debut.
