Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Maxwell S — 13 Oct 2012
I can't believe how many people aren't getting it. Kaufman proving himself as a director isn't even a relative question. Kaufman has done what nobody has done, until "Tree of Life" (2011).
He has detached himself from the cliches and all negative things of modern cinema. Those are the things that bring great movies down. Not only has he done that, but he has reached his personal epiphany.
And he stores it inside the perfectly executed film, that remains calm throughout, without losing any of it's power. Being a longtime cinephile, you need to trust me when I say that this is one of the greatest films of all time.
Forget Kaufman's other masterworks, this is his magnum opus. If your boundaries aren't beyond american cinema, or are only slightly beyond, you are not ready for this film.
