Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Ewoudt C — 02 Apr 2010
Hoffman plays the role of a troubled director beautifully and a great soundtrack gives the movie a solid sense of atmosphere. Despite all this, the movie is almost totally incoherent and seeminlgy pointless, making the 2 hours you spend watching more frustrating than enjoyable.
Maybe after a few reruns some parts should make more sense, but other elements (like the burning house motiff) will probably never be fully understood. Kaufman's world looks enchanting, but is so inaccesible that it never truly comes alive.
What a pity.
