Review of Synecdoche, New York (2008) by Josh N — 06 Nov 2014
One of my favourite films of all-time, if not my favourite. A slow-burner, but ultimately this film does not hold back on it's emotional punch, with the final act of the film gut-wrenchingly touching.
Philip Seymour Hoffman delivered the best performance of his career in this film, perfectly encompassing the role of a man struggling with finding a meaning in life attempting to create the most complete play in existence.
Life, death and everything in between. Finally, Charlie Kaufman has to also be one of my all-time favourite writers, with films like Adaptation or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind under his belt, both also incredibly emotional films.
Overall, Synecdoche, New York is definitely not a film for everybody, but I find the most enjoyable films to watch are the ones with an insight into a personal story, one with a human connection - and this is one of them.
