Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Tonia K — 10 Nov 2008
I can never decide which one of Chan-Wook Park's vengeance trilogy I like the most because each time I watch one of them it instantly becomes my favourite. When I first saw "Sympathy For Mr Vengeance" I enjoyed it but found the plot a little bit hard to follow, it wasn't until I watched it a second time that I realised just how good it actually is.
I'm not sure if that's a criticism I can aim at the film because it's probably just a case of me being a bit thick, however I do think it's fair to say that "Sympathy For Mr Vengeance" benefits from repeat viewing.
Mixing violence, torture, an emotionally charged plot and some of the darkest humour you're ever likely to come across Chan-Wook Park delivers another brilliant piece of work. If you're new to the trilogy then I'd probably recommend you watch the more accessible "Oldboy" first then take your pick out of this and "Lady Vengeance".
In the mean time if you happen to see a sticker in a public toilet promising cash for organs I would advise you not to go through with it because it will only end it tears. That or being strapped to a chair and electrocuted with a car battery.
