Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Diego C — 02 Jan 2011
I'm going to come up front and say this symapthy of Mr. Vengeance is my favirote of the Vengeance Trilogy. Something about this movie gets me just as engaged as Oldboy. What I love about Chan Wook Park is how he makes all of his charcters human and also tragic.
Even if there actions are wrong they have a meaning to them. Ryu really is a normal person wanting to help his sister and wants to do anything for her. Ha-Kyun Shin really shows his acting chops as he plays a charcter that is deaf in the whole movie.
Everybody in this movie gives a great and realistic performace taht makes me think why this movie should have gotten more attention then Oldboy. Which I don't mean Oldboy doesn't deserve praise but I find this movie a little more unquie in exucetion.
For those who want to see a great forgien drama and also has a very strong stomach. I failed to metion this but Chan Wook Park is very violent with his films. He shows Violence in a artist way or in some cases like David Croneberg who is not afarid to show violence which makes sense since Park is a huge fan of Croneberg.
All in all this movie is a powerhouse of a movie and I like how this movie comes in full circle and everything comes around and ties together quite nicely. So for those who have seen Oldboy and want to see more of Park's movies then I highly higly recommend Sympathy of mr Vengeance.
