Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Leonardo - Malacay - S — 01 Mar 2009
Brilliant. We are to garner sympathy for someone out for revenge. But who do we feel sympathy for? No characters are 'clean'. All have done good, all have done bad. They are all pushed into situations where they feel that vengeance is the only solution. In the end, we realize that getting vengeance would have ended the viscious circle of death and destruction.
This movie would not have worked if it werent for the characters of Ryu and Park. You feel their pain, and their desperation, and you can't help but want them to succeed despite that it is against each other.
Very deep and multilayered story, highly recommended.
