Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Karlyn J — 29 Mar 2009
This "prequel" to Oldboy in Chan-wook Park's revenge trilogy (in no way prerequisite viewing) is a generally upsetting and less engrossing film that poses a question foreshadowed by its title. It serves to ask the viewer which vengeful character--each arguably equal in brokenness, brutality, justification, and desperation-- they can sympathize with after an unnaturally grueling series of escalating tragedies. Interesting film, but unavoidably harsh in making its point.
Rating: B-.
