Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Julien L — 07 Oct 2009
The first part of Chan-wook Park's vengeance trilogy could almost be described as a crime-caper were it not for the fact that the crimes - and their consequences - are so serious. Ryu (Shin) is a deaf and dumb guy who lives with his ill sister.
He sells his kidney in order to fund a transplant op for her but ends up getting ripped off. His revolutionary friend Young-mi (Bae) suggests they kidnap her ex-boss's daughter and hold her for ransom.
The dark humour as every little thing goes wrong just makes this tale even more bleak. It's a savage piece of cinema that hailed Park's arrival on the international scene that paved the way for Oldboy.
