Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Gregory W — 27 Mar 2011
The more this film settles on me the more I like it. Park is an intelligent filmmaker with solid grasp of form and style. The episodic nature of Korean movies in general, usually a weakness, here is utilized brilliantly as the stories of Ryu and his rich boss, although distinct, weave together seamlessly.
There is a little excess around the edges of the film and some of his ideas are not developed as much as they could be, but all in all, a fine film.
