Review of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) by Sumit S — 09 Nov 2012
The first in the Vengeance trilogy is a very stylistically filmed and layered movie with themes of revenge, loss, betrayal n guilt nicely captured by director Chan Wook Park. The first half of the movie was slow, out of flow & seemed to be heading towards disappointment but the second half turned out to be a major improvement n takes the film to a highly satisfying conclusion.
The movie is no doubt brutal but the violence is there because of a purpose. Overall, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is a nicely experimented revenge drama that despite of its shortcomings, remains a much better n satisfying thriller than its Hollywood counterparts.
