Review of Swordfish (2001) by Jy S — 28 Apr 2009
Dominic Cena, fresh off of Gone in 60 Seconds, delivers Swordfish, which is just a better than decent crime thriller with action. The story does have some meat to it and it involves hacking as one of its driving points.
On the other hand, a lot of elements throughout the film come across as a little corny and seem they are thrown in just for the heck of it. Fortunately, the pacing is quick and this 100 minute movie tends to fly by.
The opening sequence is actually pretty impressive and the ending isn't too shabby as well. It is everything in the middle that takes a bit of a dive. I ain't just talking about the hookers going into the pool either.
The action seems unnecessary, although it can be entertaining at times. The big explosions and heavy machine gun in the street is just too much for a film like this. At least watching guys take a spill down a large steep slope is a fun watch.
The casting is a bit of a letdown. Hugh Jackman doesn't impress and John Travolta isn't anything new. However, fans of Travolta will probably like him in here. Halle Berry, on the other hand, has a great character and it isn't just because of the nudity.
Don Cheadle has too little airtime, but is good with what he has. Vinnie Jones and the rest of the supporting cast are forgettable.Swordfish, while having a good start and ending, is just another movie to pass the time.
Mildly entertaining for at least 1 or 2 watches.
