Review of Swordfish (2001) by Daniel C — 26 Mar 2014
A computer hacker is recruited by a man intent on stealing lost government money.
Swordfish is a decent action movie for its time - at a time when movies were doing whatever they could to follow on the wave of success surrounding the Matrix trilogy - you'll note the green tinge in the film and the special effects involved in some of the sequences. But Swordfish does manage to stand on its own story-wise.
Stanley is recruited by Ginger & Gabriel to help get into a bank and retrieve millions of dollars. Gabriel promises Stanley he can get his daughter back from his separated and uncooperative ex-wife. But what follows as Gabriel's true story is revealed is car chases, lots of gun fights and a scene involving a helicopter lifting a bus onto a skyscraper!
The music is a bit dated and intrusive at points, and Halle Berry's famous (at the time) boob scene is quite out of place and serves no purpose except to look at her boobs for a few seconds. Ultimately, the movie is about distraction and misdirection, and there's plenty of that going on.
Still, as an action flick that's 13 years old, I still found it enjoyable and entertaining.
