Review of Swiss Army Man (2016) by Brandon E — 23 Jul 2016
A WTF movie. I really don't know what to make of it. When I heard of this movie, I figured that I wanted to see it because of the fucked up idea. I mean it's original but it's a balls to the wall original idea. Much respect for this film not being to artsy fartsy. The film plays itself seriously however certain shots were setup so the audience is in on how ridiculous the premise is. I'm not going to look to hard into this film because I'm pretty sure people are already doing that by calling it one of the greatest films (I haven't checked on that but I know I wouldn't be surprised).
On paper it would probably be Weekend at Bernie's with farts. However the film plays it a different way. Paul Dano is a guy stranded on an ocean. He is about to commit suicide when a body washes on shore. Radcliffe is the body that is pretty much a Swiss Army knife for Dano's survival. His farts can be used to propel Dano cross water. The corpse is a multi purpose tool. Dano soon discovers that the corpse can talk. Throughout there adventure the two talk about life. The corpse has to learn from Dano about love, people, and behavior.
This film is the creation of Daniel Scheinert and Kwan. If you seen the Turn Down for What video then one would understand how this film came to be. It's wonderfully shot and I love how the corpse talking wasn't dissolved by it all being in the main characters head. The film just runs with the premise. I appreciate the film for being bold in that approach. The selling point for this movie would be to ask someone if they want to watch a movie where Radcliffe plays a farting corpse l. Just expect the film to take itself seriously.
