Review of Swiss Army Man (2016) by Scott S — 04 Jul 2016
"What the Fuck?!" That's the last line of the film, and honestly, I can't remember hearing a final line sum up a film so perfectly in a long time.
The film displays some truly fantastic visuals, I wouldn't expect anything else from two directors who spent most of their careers making music videos. The music is also tremendously sweeping through out, and definitely a highlight if you saw it in theaters like I did. There are also moments, where it "slows down" to try and ask questions about life, loneliness, and depression. So much so, for the most part I was unsure if the entire film was a hallucination. Even when you think you know if something is real or not, the film seems to go out of its way to make you question what you're seeing.
With that in mind, the movie also takes huge steps forward only to pull itself back with incredibly weird, and often, unnecessary "humor." The jokes and gags run from; funny, to annoying, to funny, to frustrating, and back to annoying all the time. A lot of the time the film seems to have a serious tone problem. It's not sure what it wants to be.
But maybe, that's the point. Maybe the whole thing is one giant mind fuck no one is meant to get. If so, bravo. If not, well, at least it had great visuals and music. Yay.
