Review of Swing Vote (2008) by Kevin L — 08 Mar 2009
Am I the only one on the planet who thought this was a great movie? It just made my trust in Kevin Costner (which was already sky-high) sail right on into outer space. The guy's a genius actor. He takes the character of the dead-beat dad and makes him likeable, then develops that character into someone inspiring.
The loving relationship between the father and daughter was refreshing, since deadbeat dads in movies are often portrayed very negatively. The messages here about our political system were extremely valid.
What this movie does is points the finger at our leaders and asks, "Okay, now answer me this!" Many might be upset that we never find out who wins or what answers the candidates have for the questions presented, but that's because we haven't been given those answers in real life yet.
That's what the purpose of this movie is. Really, don't listen to the critics and rent this one. It's funny, uplifting, and emotional. Kevin Costner never sleeps through a performance, and this was one of his best.
And considering his previous awesome performances, that's saying quite a bit. Kevin Costner, you rock my world.
