Review of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971) by Alex S — 18 Apr 2009
Watched on 4/2/09. STARRING- The Black Community. CO-STARRING- All the Brothers and Sisters who ever wanted to stick it to the Man. DIRECTED BY- The Only Motherf*cker who can make a name like Melvin Van Peebles sound BaadAsssss.
So this film is credited as Pimp Starting the indie Blaxploitation scene in the 70's, it's also credited with successfully weirding the "bad ass" in ME out with only it's title sequence montage, which is hard to do, I rarely get wierded out.
..but this film lived up to it's RATED-X status within the first 5 minutes. It's psychedelic/raw/gritty presentation is pretty outstanding. Technically, Peebles broke a lot of "film making rules", but it only helped saturate the film with an authentic style and character that has been used and copied in countless films since.
That being said, everything else...not so interesting. With a Plot that was described by the Writer like this, "...Well...I was just REALLY horny at the time..." it's hard to be too upset at the outcome.
What IS trully interesting, insightful, and hilarious is the 30min Documentary called "THE REAL DEAL" in the Special Features. You follow 70 year-old writer/director/actor Melvin Van Peebles around France as he talks about being the godfather of indie films.
.. naked chicks with paper bags over thier heads.......and of course...The Clap....
