Review of Sweet Smell of Success (1957) by Doug C — 21 Sep 2010
"I'd hate to take a bite out of you. You're a cookie full of arsenic." A late fatalistic noir about misguided ambition, this film offers a fascinating portrait of a ruthless journalist, played by Burt Lancaster, and an unscrupulous press agent, played by Tony Curtis, bent on destroying the relationship between the journalist's sister and a jazz musician.
The film uses impressionistic character studies, delivered with exceptional acting performances, to create its dark noir themes, accompanied by classic disorienting camerawork in central Manhattan and Times Square.
One of the classic noirs.
