Review of Sweet Smell of Success (1957) by Zack M — 27 Mar 2011
If ever there were a film that showed the truth behind the phrase, "The pen is mightier than the sword" it would be this one. It's a film that leaves you at the end, of its short runtime, to marinate in the brilliance of its writing and philosophy.
The writing in particular is outstanding. It's a film that brings a new meaning to witty screenplay. Every line could be used as a quote because every line is expertly crafted with amazing direction.
The script is largely what saves the plot from being just a melodrama. Because at face value that is what the story is, but if you look past that you see it is a film about morals and respect for your profession, and toys with the idea of "How far is too far?" when professional and personal lives overlap.
It truly is a magnificently told and directed story. You can't help but leave the film with a satisfied feeling toward how the plot and characters developed and their elegantly impacting ending.
