Review of Sweet Smell of Success (1957) by Aidan H — 17 Jun 2011
I've only seen this movie once, and that's all it takes. The Godfather of New York dramas. The BAD: If I can remember, some subplots were very hard to follow, if they were even important at all (they probably were).
And Hey, if it came out before the 2000s, it's probably a little smarter than a brain like mine can process. And lastly for the bad, there isn't a sequel. The GOOD: it's a wonderfully troubling tale that has an overwhelming sensation of intelligence.
You gotta love a movie that makes you feel for a guy that's technically an asshole. Don't even get me started on the atmosphere!! It almost qualified as a sci-fi: the environment should have been nominated for best supporting actor.
The story oozes off the screen and into your cerebral area, then it lays little Curtis-Lancaster eggs of brilliance. There should be an involuntary screening of this all over hollywood, so that that money grubbing execs can see, just for a moment, what's missing in movies today.
Can't wait to see it again.
