Review of Sweet Sixteen (1983) by Robert S — 10 Dec 2008
Great, underrated slasher/mystery with a phenomenal cast and some real skill behind the camera. On the outside, Sweet Sixteen might seem like your typical teenage slasher movie, but upon further inspection, one will discover a surprisingly subdued and adult affair. There's some interesting and likable characters here for once and an actual story line, complete with backstories and subplots. Aleisa Shirley is fantastic as the troubled Melissa, the new girl in town who has already found a way with the town's male population. It's a true shame that she seems to have disappeared from the film scene. Another notable aspect of Sweet Sixteen is its haunting title song "Melissa".
Take a little time to seek this one out. You might be pleasantly surprised! A new special edition from the wonderful Code Red/BCI has just been released with some great special features and TWO different versions of the movie. It's worth your money!
