Review of Sweet Movie (1974) by Alex S — 03 Aug 2007
This is a very difficult movie to review. I cannot honeslty suggest that you go out of your way to watch it but if you happen to find yourself able to see it for free, knock yourself out. When a film is billed as an "art house shocker," you know you are in for a treat.
Between an almost silent Miss World Virign winner being reborn and a woman with a very Communist-like ship offering "sweets" to whoever is interested, the movie never backs down from showing you stuff you have (hopefully) never seen before.
For some, that is enough to see it. And sure, that is art (technically), but the message is almost lost in the sheer absurdity going on (sex in public, war footage of corpses, mass regurgitation, etc.
). One star for being unlike anything ever seen and another star for somewhat lodging itself in my brain so that it will not be forgotten (staying power is perhaps the greatest achievement an artist can hope for).
