Review of Sweet Land (2005) by Gary F — 29 Oct 2007
Hard to give this the same number of stars as Georgia Rule, when this was far superior as a film; a piece of art. But the pacing on this was very, very slow. Don't start this if you're tired!
The cinematography is beautiful; some of the scenes are like a gorgeous photograph come to life. The visual images and the understated elegance with which the story was unfolded are the film's greatest strengths. Good performances & very touching. Still, it's a bit plodding and, although the story is bound up with strong emotions, even passion, the characters remain remote to the viewer. The movie felt somewhat aloof or clinical. I never really connected with the characters.
Still, I liked the unique snaposhot it offered of an often-neglected time and place iin American history, even while dealing with universal themes of outsiders fitting in, cultural and moral differences, and the difficulty of farm life. The film's depiction of these common themes was more eloquent for not beating us over the head with them.
