Review of Sweet Charity (1969) by Jennifer S — 08 Jul 2008
Amusing, but doesn't really work as a musical; the dance sequences are waaaaaay too long and "Hey Big Spender" is really the only memorable song. Editing is really choppy and disjointed..
. I have no idea what they were thinking when they randomly inserted still montages instead of actual action. Cinematography is noticeably awkward and often very loose; for the parade scene, the camera is zoomed out so far that it makes Charity's joyous parade seem like it has about 10 ppl in it and thus rather insignificant instead of boisterous and celebratory.
The movie does have some great performances and cameos; Shirley MacLaine is charming, Sammy Davis Jr. is hilarious as the hippy / stoner leader, and Ricardo Montalban is wonderfully self-important as the famous actor.
