Review of Sweet Charity (1969) by Liam C — 04 Mar 2015
There's gotta be nothing better than this, a visually bold, brilliantly acted musical comedy that flouts some of the standard Hollywood conventions while obeying just enough to remain a grand tribute to the heyday of the movie musical.
Shirley MacLaine is the perfect Charity, funny and crazy and vulnerable. John McMartin is more than worthy of her as her neurotic beau. The real attraction for most people here will be Bob Fosse's electrifying choreography.
He directed for the first time here, too, and he uses the same joint-popping, hat-swiveling style to the editing and cinematography as he does to the dance numbers. Critics were not kind to the unusual stylistic choices, but it's better than even Fosse's superb "Cabaret" (which "borrowed" both dance moves and moviemaking tricks from this film).
