Review of Sweet Bird of Youth (1962) by Michael R — 26 Sep 2010
Newman is a young man who just wants a big break to make it as a Hollywood actor. Page is an alcoholic former movie star who has made a film recently but is so obsessed with age she has run off with younger lover Newman to his hometown in Florida.
Newman's character loves the daughter of a local dirty politician who feels the young man is not good enough for his daughter and is gearing up for a political rally. Sexual and emotional tension really heat up in this Tennessee Williams adaptation.
The censorship at the time keeps the film a little too restrained, but terrific dialogue and great performances - especially by Geraldine Page and Ed Begley as the corrupt politician.
