Review of Sweet and Lowdown (1999) by Sergiu C — 21 Oct 2009
Woody Allen's biopic about the fiction jazz guitarist, Emmett Ray is ultimately a very effective character study, and the springboard for a tremendous performance by Sean Penn, who breathes life into the VERY eccentric Ray.
The story is very fascinating, entertaining, and hilarious all at once, and the faux-documentary style of the film only serves to add to the realism of the film. Samantha Morton gives a great turn, playing Penn's mute love interest, she really manages to channel a great deal of emotions with no dialogue whatsoever.
This is another great film in Woody Allen's stellar filmography.
