Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) by Filius S — 13 Dec 2015
Sweeney Todd is the musical adaptation of the story of a guy who was tossed in prison, gets out, and starts murdering every motherfucker that comes into his barber shop. This is a Tim Burton film, so the lead roles are of course given to Johnny Depp for Todd, and Helena Bonham Carter as the lead female character: Helena Bonham Carter.
Carter plays a woman with sick baking skills, and decides to team up with Depp, and they end up making meat pies out of every person Depp kills. The pies are a hit, and they sing songs and cut throats until something happens that you'll have to watch to avoid me spoiling the movie.
TL;DR - 6/10.
This is an alright film. The location and set design is pretty solid, and the costumes, makeup and special effects are top notch. Depp and Carter play their parts well, and the movies pace is pretty decent. So why only 6 out of 10? Well, the musical part. Not the biggest fan of showtunes personally. Also, after watching so much Tim Burton in my youth, this comes across as too... Tim Burtoney. I mean, this might actually be his most Burtoney film of all time, and I guess I'd rather watch something like Edward Scissorhands to get that fix. If you're into both of those things, this movie will probably be at least an 8/10 for you, so keep that in mind when deciding whether or not to watch this film.
