Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1982) by Elise H — 22 Aug 2008
This was good, but in my mind the tim burton version was better. the play was too chorusy and broadtwayish for my taste. I preffered the closer, centralized new version. I wil say that angela lansbury was a far superior ms.
lovett, and george hearn is a better singer than johnny, however I found johnny to portray crazy better. I loved the full versions of a little priest and god that's good. as for the supporting cast, anthony was way to gay, and johanna was too theatrical, even for broadway.
the new toby was so much better thatn this one. ed sanders sang so much better and was a much better actor. however, I did like that toby was completely crazy at the end, where as in the new version, it was less clear taht he was nuts.
