Review of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1982) by Anne M — 10 Nov 2008
Lansbury is peerless as Mrs. Lovett, and George Hearn makes an excellent Sweeney Todd. This is, of course, the original Sondheim musical, so overacting is abundant, and subtlety is not to be found. Definitely an enjoyable adaptation for Sondheim devotees, though I must admit that I am in the minority who prefer Burton's take on this classic musical.
This is, however, simply a matter of taste, and one cannot deny the genius behind this musical.
