Review of S.W.A.T. (2003) by Ryan L — 16 Jul 2012
Well there isn't a whole lot to say about this film. It's not great. But for some reason I find it a lot of fun to watch. There is a couple of reasons for this. First of all, in general, for whatever reason, the police genre in movies is really quite small.
There are not a lot of them, and there are very few good ones (Training Day and Se7en are the only stand outs in my mind). The reason there are so few of them is the vast majority are just dumb lame brain action movies that really offer no substance (unlike Training Day and Se7en).
S.W.A.T. is no exception, it has no greater substance then offering the story at hand. That story isn't all that original either, guy gets kicked out and is offered a second chance. In the end he must fight his ex-partner who blames his current situation on him and has turned evil.
Ive seen it a million times. I think the reason that I still like S.W.A.T. then are the actors. Now there characters are very 2 Dimensional. You really couldn't care less what happens to any of them.
However the cast is superb (Samuel L Jackson, my man Jeremy Renner, Michelle Rodriguez, LL Cool J, and Colin Ferrell). For whatever reason these people are fun to watch. Now I've only seen it once before and it had been a while.
And I'm pretty confident I will never watch it again, but this did not feel like a waste of time. I found it entertaining and that is it. It offered nothing more then and hour of police action. And unlike most cop movies it made it entertaining.
I wouldn't recommend you watch it however unless you already have Netflix and can just stream it without losing a penny. That's the best way to do it.
