Review of Suspiria (2018) by Austin R — 12 Dec 2018
This is what I want all remakes to be; totally different from the original in almost every way yet still retaining its spirit and including a handful of fun references for fans. While the original is an absolute feast for the eyes and ears with its garish color scheme and wild soundtrack, this update achieves the same results with the exact opposite strategy. Everything in this film is drab, wintry and forbidding, including Thom Yorke's spindly and sparse score.
I will give this film points for being a more cohesive story than the original, even if that wasn't the point in the first place. The acting is also strong throughout and Tilda Swinton is absolutely made for a tense, otherworldly story like this. There's also plenty to dive into underneath the surface of this one, especially when it comes to some of the social commentary that firmly places this as a film made during a time of extreme social upheaval.
Overall I really loved this take and the complete change of perspective it gives on a film that really did a lot for me. I still give the nod to the original for how absolutely stunning it is but check this out if you enjoy experimental horror movies and aren't scared off by a long run time.
