Review of Suspiria (2018) by Alex G — 04 Nov 2018
This is a hard film to review. It doesn't really fall into any stereotypical category--for better and worse. The film is light in substance, while also thinking it is saying a lot. It's artful while also being excessively self indulgent.
That said, there is such beauty to be found in moments of this movie. The 5th and 6th act have such horrifying and entrancing qualities to them. I can forgive a lot of a movie gives me something new to chew on and this one does that in spades.
The story is ripe with fantastic ideas--all falling short in the end. Yet, I will take a movie like this--one going the distance of its own vision--any day over the generic films that do something we've seen a million times perfectly fine.
I think I either liked it or loved it. I could never recommend it, but it was a frustrating, rewarding and disappointing experience I am still pondering.
