Review of Suspiria (1977) by Andrew S — 27 Mar 2011
Funny the difference time will make. I haven't seen this for around 20 years, and then it was a pan'n'scan VHS which I'm guessing wasn't run off of a particularly good print. I enjoyed it, and certain things always stuck, but in all honesty it had never quite earned its classic reputation for me.
As a teenager, it just seemed a little dated and overwrought. But now, seeing it in its proper ratio, with vivid colour and remastered sound, it really comes alive. In fact, I must admit that my enjoyment of it comes more from the visuals and Goblin's prog soundtrack (including the classic main theme), rather than any real abiding horror.
It's a stunning film, with an incredible, eye-melting palette, complemented by an exceptional use of light and shadow. Well worth revisiting.
