Review of Survival of the Dead (2010) by Jamie S — 29 Mar 2010
I'm a huge fan of Romero. Not just his dead films, but almost his entire lifes work. So I think it's a little odd that I chose this film to be the first of his I review. But really, what the fuck am I going to say (especially about his dead films) that hasn't already been said a million times before.
Anyway. The CGI was bad. And in the first half there's a lot. And I'll be honset, being the devoted Romero fan than I am, I would have probably turned it off mid way through if anyone else had made this.
But what really saved this film from being just another low budget horror flick with some bad CGI was the one thing a lot of people, including hardcore fans of Romero, don't give him credit for. His total ability as a writer.
His stories and characters have always been the main reason for my love of his movies. And with his dead films it's always great to watch the conflict play out between the dead and the living, but what's even more interesting to watch is the conflict between the characters themselves.
Kudos to Romero for making another zombie film laced with poltical and social commentary. And, for once again, telling us what will be the cause of our downfall. Our absolute refusal of admitting when we're wrong.
