Review of Survival of the Dead (2010) by Frederick M — 04 May 2010
A new George A Romero movie about zombies. Yay zombies! The man pretty much invented the modern zombie genre and yet this movie pretty much blows. It's sad. It's kind of like George Lucas. He made American Graffiti and THX which were both very good but all he does now is anything associated with Star Wars.
This movie ties in with the also lame Diary of the Dead (the video cam zombie movie). Romero also expands on the dead learning to become more human. It defeats the purpose of mindless zombies. There's no suspense.
The social message to me is about American liberalism vs. American conservatism. The culture war of the first decade of the 21st century. Science vs. God (faith). Believing that we must kill all zombies and believing that killing zombies is wrong and God will punish us because they're still semi-human.
'Survival' not as classic as Dawn of the Dead (1978) and probably ranks on my list with Diary of the Dead and Day of the Dead. Even Land of the Dead was better than this. The special effects were pretty much poor CGI and the acting was crappy.
