Review of Survival of the Dead (2010) by Ken S — 23 Feb 2014
Man...this was kind of boring. Romero wanted to do a Dead movie for every decade, he missed the 90s, but he was able to come back with a decent film in "Land of the Dead" in 2005. Then he made "Diary of the Dead" 2 years later, and it wasn't great.
..but then he made a third film in the same decade...and it just feels like he is out of ideas in his old age, and just doing what is expected of him. There are no badass characters, or likable ones here either.
The Irish accents are laughable at best. I don't care about the O'Flynns and the Muldoons. By the way Patrick O'Flynn and Seamus Muldoon are the most cliche Irish names possible. Then there is the CGI.
..which looks terrible and has replaced the great practical gore of old...which was vastly more believable and frightening to look at. Shame that the series has to end on this kind of note. Maybe Romero will get a solid idea and make another good film.
I doubt it though, I suspect he is out of ideas for zombies, the box office for this film wasn't nearly enough to warrant more, and he is getting quite up there in the age department. So watch at your own risk, you are bound to be bored, because the movies pacing is slow as hell, and there isn't even enough of the crappy gore to really appeal to the gore fans.
