Review of Survival of the Dead (2010) by Greg B — 23 May 2010
This movie only really deserves 30 or 40%. The one reason I wanted to push this into positive territory is it's availability on Amazon prior to theatrical release. I'll pay 10 bucks for a 48 hr rental of a movie that hasn't hit the theaters. Take a hint Hollywood, otherwise you WILL lose out to indie film makers who are willing to do so.
As for the movie. Sigh... Romero does not understand human interaction. To call them 2 dimensional would imply that there is an extra dimension I have never heard of. Completely flat depictions contrasted by over the top caricatures. I kept expecting the captain to try and sell me fish sticks at some point.
Romero, if you want to keep making films, don't fall into the George Lucas trap. You need to accept your weaknesses as a story teller and and acknowledge your distance from modern culture. Find a talented young director and writer and discuss your wonderful social commentary. Then let them translate it to an audience you no longer understand.
