Review of Survival of the Dead (2010) by Jon F — 05 Sep 2010
This one is unlike all George Romero's other zombie movies and I can tell from the bad reviews people gave it, they didn't like that. It's taking the zombie genre that he created and putting it into more a western genre.
Romero has said that the inspiration was The Big Country. It's not necessarily about the zombies as it is about the two leaders of the warring families on the island. It also brings the question of what would you do? Is it worth trying to assimilate the zombies or are they too much of a risk and need to be eliminated? I think that's a valid point and was explored well here.
The movie was also quite funny. The island is of the coast of Delaware, but there are these two old guys with over exaggerated Irish accents. It must have been fun for a serious dramatic actor like Kenneth Welsh to be able to play something so over the top.
So contrary to what everyone said, I do not believe George Romero has lost his touch and I would gladly watch any other movies he puts out.
