Review of Survival of the Dead (2010) by Robin W — 14 Sep 2010
I never thought I'd ever say this, but George Romero should really retire from making zombie films. "Survival of the Dead" is a perfectably watchable and enjoyable time killer that contains a couple of inventive gore scenes and is definitely worth a look for Romero completists, but it really does seem like the man who made zombie films popular in the first place has officially run out of ideas.
His mock-documentary zombie film, "Diary of the Dead", wasn't entirely successful, but at least he was trying something different, but "Survival of the Dead" just feels like it's going through the motions.
Ten years ago, a movie like this might have satisfied me, but since recent films like "Shaun of the Dead" and "Zombieland" have brought such a fresh, unique perspective to the genre, a zombie film that just goes through the motions doesn't really cut it any more.
Ironically, one of the few unique moments in this film, involving a pack of zombies eating a dead horse, could pretty much be used for a perfect analogy for Romero and his beating of a dead horse.
