Review of Survival of the Dead (2010) by Sleez B — 23 Nov 2011
Survival of the Dead comes to us with Romero trying to survive as the King of the Zombies. Survival of the Dead continues where Diary of the Dead left off, but follows a group of soldiers. Trying to survive, they go out to find a safe place to hide until this zombie epidemic blows over.
They find a young teen and decide to go off to an island after watching an advertisement from a shady Irish man. Once there, they become entangled in a conflict between two families: O Flynn and the Muldoon.
One approaches them with a kill and survive attitude while the other one goes for a rehab and zoo attitude. I must say that Survival of the Dead does not sound like the best idea and shows that Romero may be tiring, but I was still entertained.
No longer scary, the zombies and the film is pretty amusing and at times, funny. I had some few laughs and thought this was a lot better than Diary of the Dead, but Romero needs to kick it up a notch with the storytelling.
Unlike Diary, Survival has some decent special effects with the mix of CGI and props. The CGI in here is a lot better and believable than Diary, but it will make one wish that Romero would put a little effort in the gore.
Sure, CGI is very easy to do, but it does equal to the hard work special effects that paid off (remember Dawn of the Dead?). It was really great to see Romero do Land of the Dead, but Romero needs to take a break again.
I actually preferred his high budget film of Land then I did in Diary and Survival (and Day of the Dead too). If he is to make another zombie flick, hopefully it is great and has gore similar to Dawn and Day of the Dead.
I thought Alan van Spring was pretty decent in here.
